Blog Talk Radio: Vacations on a Budget

roadtrip Pictures, Images and Photos

It is that time of the year! Many of you may be planning to go on summer vacation - if you haven't already! If so, I hope you tuned in to our show yesterday on blog talk radio: Keeping It Centsible: Vacations on a Budget!

If you missed it - no worries! You can access the show anytime from any computer. Just check it out on my left side bar (the little blue player). You can play the show - or any other show - any time you want.

Here are some highlights from the show!

  • Before ANYTHING you should budget your trip - plan early. This means deciding well in advance how much a trip is going to cost you - including travel, stay, meals, and souvenirs. Then you can set aside a little money at a time until you have enough - do go on a trip you can't afford!
  • Get the whole family involved in saving and planning: brainstorm resources that you can set aside for your vacation (you know "extra" income) like, garage sale proceeds, rebates, eBay sales, cashing in coins, baby sitting money, birthday money, bonuses, etc.
  • To save money on flights visit kayak.com - it searches lots of other travel sites like Expedia, Hotwire, Priceline, and Cheaptickets to find the best rate possible with TONS of airlines. You can also set it to remind you with an email if a cheaper price comes up. If I am hunting for cheap airfare this is always where I start. You can also search hotels, car rentals, cruises, and packages.
  • Save money once you arrive by only eating one nice meal out per day. Make sure your accomodation provide a kitchen or partial kitchen - or at the very least a fridge and microwave. As soon as you arrive visit a local grocery store and purchase bread, cereal, peanut butter, milk, sodas, etc. This way you can have breakfast in the room (if your hotel doesn't provide it) before you leave in the morning and eat a nice meal out mid day. Then, if you are still hungry in the evening you can easily prepare a sandwich in the room. Food eats up a lot of your vacation budget. This is a good way to still enjoy some nice restaurants and keep from piddling your money away on fast food.
  • Research your trip before you leave. Decide which places are a must see and which ones you can skip. This is a good way to determine cost of admissions before you leave. You can also find a ton of coupons for the places you will visit this way! Print and take them with when you leave.
  • Go on vacation with another couple or family. Splitting the cost can be helpful. A lot of times you can rent a condo or home for much cheaper than staying at a hotel if you go in with another family. You'll also have a lot of extra amenities this way - like a full kitchen - which will save you a lot of money too! If you are driving this can also help on the cost of gas.
  • Which leads me to the last tip: ROAD TRIP! Some of my favorite vacations have been road trips. Gas is a lot cheaper than airfare! Pack a cooler with some picnic foods and you'll be saving even more! Even renting a car can be much more cost effective over several airline tickets. Split the cost of gas and you're on your way!

This will be our last official show on Thursday for the summer. We will bring you an all new “make-up show” this coming Tuesday, June 30th. Denise and I decided to focus more on our families this summer so we are putting the show on hiatus. We are exploring other options and formats for the show which we would love to continue in the fall when life is a little less hectic!

We thank all of our loyal listeners for your support over these last 5 months! The archives from past shows will always be available for your listening enjoyment.

Having a "Stay"cation

If you missed it, Alyssa and I talked about having a "stay"cation on blog talk radio tonight. You heard me right, a "stay"cation - not vacation. A "stay"cation is a great alternative to a vacation if you are strapped for cash this summer. You can stay right at home and still have an eventful time and get some much needed R&R.

If you missed the show, you can still listen on demand on my blue BlogTalkRadio player on the left hand side bar. You can listen any day, any time - when it is convenient for you!

Here are some highlights from the show:
  • When planning a "stay"cation determine the dates and create a schedule of "events" much like you would for a vacation. If you've got kids be sure to involve them.
  • Get your house ready before the "stay"cation: Put clean sheets on the bed - add a few chocolates, purchase some yummy new bath products, a new book or magazine to read, clean the house beforehand so you aren't tempted to do regular chores during your "stay"cation.
  • Think like a tourist: search the internet for local attractions and/or a calendar of local events (hiking or bike trails, state parks for picnics, theme parks, sporting events, concerts, local festivals, zoos, aquariums, community theater, broadway plays, etc). Also, use the internet to find coupons for these things and for your local restaurants!
  • Plan an exciting "event" for each day - either something to get you out of the house (see above) or something at home - like theme dinners, renting and watching movies, camping out in the back yard, making your own "water park" via the water hose and a sprinkler or wading pool, playing board games, etc.
  • Don't do anything you wouldn't do if you were on vacation - UNPLUG! Unplug the phone, computer, cell phones, etc. Check your snail mail but don't open it! Just let it pile up much like it would if you were on vacation. Don't clean out closets or clean house (do that before the "stay"cation).
  • Break the Rules: Stay up late, sleep in, eat junk food!
  • Take lots of pictures: document your fun experiences with photos! You can make a scrapbook and you'll cherish these fun new memories just like you would any vacation - but without the spender's remorse!
Has your family planned or had a "stay"cation? I'd love to hear your tips and ideas! Share it with us in the comments!

Our very first show will follow at 8pm EST and the winner will be announced!

An account also allows you to save your favorite shows, and set reminders for upcoming shows as well.

Tonight we will be interviewing one another and taking questions from callers. The outline for tonight's show is going to be relaxed because we want to give you guys an opportunity to get to know us!

We'll also be announcing a big suprise for next week's show!!! So don't miss out!

Come Listen - AND CALL IN - on Blog Talk Radio!

I Have a Talk Show

Alyssa from Keeping the Kingdom First and I will be hosting a weekly show on Blog Talk Radio! We are very excited to be joining forces (and brains- you know those preggo brains!) for this show to bring you some exciting information!

If you are new to Keeping The Kingdom First, Alyssa is a CVS fanatic just like me! She is also expecting a baby this year! Although, she is much more savvy in the area of motherhood than I (this will be her third baby)!

We'll be talking about CVS shopping, how to score the best deals at your grocery store, stockpiling, freebies, deals, and we'll be doing give aways! The main theme of this show will be about how to save you money! That includes saving money on your grocery and household budgets as well as saving money raising baby!

We want YOUR input too! Please leave us a comment telling us what topics you would like to hear more about! And, the cool thing is, on blog talk radio, you can call in and talk to Alyssa and I. This will give you an opportunity to ask us questions and to add your two cents!

Our show information can be found HERE
It will be on Thursday evenings at 8:00 EST
Can't make it? No worries, the show will be recorded and you can come right here to my blog and get the link to listen later. Of course, if you are going to participate - call in or talk in the chat room then MARK YOUR CALENDAR!! =)

For now Alyssa and I will be known as the "Frugal Baby Bloggers." But this is just a temporary name. We want YOU to help us name our show - and there is something in it for you! You can win big just for offering your ideas! Check that out in the following post!

Help Us Choose A Name for Our Blog Talk Radio Show ... And WIN!

Alyssa at Keeping the Kingdom First and I are hosting a brand spankin' new show on Blog Talk Radio and we need your help to come up with a catchy name!

We're going to be bringing you lots of information on how to save money on your grocery and household budgets as well as thoughts and advice on how to raise baby on a budget!

If your show name is chosen, you will win a cooler with 4 family-serve entrees (meat and vegetable lasagnas, eggplant parmesan, etc.) from Michael Angelo's Gourmet Foods AND 10 free coupons to keep or give to friends!

Here's how the contest will work:

1. Leave a comment here (or on Alyssa's blog) telling us your idea for a name for our blog talk radio show. You have until Friday 1/16 at midnight to suggest a name.

2. On Saturday, Alyssa and I will combine all the names suggested here and on her blog and pick 5 (or more - depending on how many great names you guys suggest!) that we would be happy with.

3. We'll post the top names and then, you guys come back and vote Sunday through Thursday at 7:00 EST - that's your last chance!

4. The winning name will be chosen Thursday 1/22 and announced on our show at 8:00 EST! That person will win the 4 entrees and 10 coupons! Good Luck! And, I can't wait to talk to you guys in person on Blog Talk Radio!
