Save Some "Green" & Go Green with Cloth Diapers! Review and Give Away of Bumkins Diaper Covers!

After doing my research I decided that I would give cloth diapers a whirl. You can read all about my decision to cloth diaper as well as how I'm handling it over at the Baby Buzz blog. I hope you'll visit and leave me a comment!

Let me just tell you that the world of cloth diapering has changed tremendously since your mama used cloth diapers! There are a zillion different kinds and prices are all over the place. Not only that, there are several contraptions now that they didn't have before - such as a sprayer that hooks to your toilet, Snappies, and wetbags. After reading a ton of articles on other blogs, visiting several websites that sell cloth diapers, comparing prices, and twittering with other moms about their preferences, I settled on using prefolds (probably what you think of when someone says "cloth diaper"), and diaper covers. I also bought a few pocket diapers to try later on.

I ordered 2 dozen prefold diapers in size small - I skipped the newborn size to save a little money. I also got the opportunity to try Bumkins diaper covers in the newborn size. The small prefolds are a little big for the diaper covers; it is likely that the newborn sized ones would have fit better and would have looked trimmer, but we are making do.

Diaper covers are the new "rubber pants." Those big poofy pants that baby used to wear that looked like a shower cap with leg holes have been replaced with a sleeker, trimmer cousin that looks like a disposable diaper in that it is cut like a disposable and it has velcro tabs. Another unique thing about the diaper cover I am using, Bumkins, is that they are made of waterproof fabric that is silky and soft. They are PVC, phthalate and BPA free and are not made with rubber or plastic. They are, however, very waterproof! Another neat thing about Bumkins is that they have a mesh "air vent" in the back to keep the diaper cool. And, what every mother wants to no - they are virtually leak proof (I haven't had a leak or "blow-out" yet!) thanks to the extra leg gussets.

I also ordered 4 more diaper cover in size small and 2 pocket diapers, Fuzzi Bunz, to try later down the road. In addition, I got a diaper pail (which is really a small trash can with a secure lid), a couple dozen cheap washcloths, and a wet bag to take with me in my diaper bag to bring wet and stinky diapers home.

The task of cloth diapering seemed a little daunting at first, but really once I did it for a day I realized it really wasn't any more difficult than disposables! And, washing them really is no sweat either. As a new mom I am washing and drying laundry everyday anyway - what's another load! I hardly even notice! If you want to see how I use my cloth diapers - step by step - watch my video above!

Later down the road I will order the next sizes of these diaper covers. And, the really cool part is I can keep them and reuse them with baby number two and my savings will multiply! I won't need to buy anything to diaper baby #2! Everything will be still be in great shape. That is the really nice part about cloth diapers and diaper covers - they are reusable through several children! You can even resale them if you don't need them any longer - they hold there value! Now how nice is that - you can make money selling you baby's diapers - you can't do that with disposables! =)

I love my Bumkins diaper covers so much I reached out to Bumkins and they are willing to let one of you give 'em a try as well! I am so excited that one of you will get the same opportunity as me!

Bumkins can be ordered rigtht from their website HERE. There are several different prints and the covers can be ordered in singles as well. But, the diaper cover bundle that I have, which includes 3 covers and a wet bag retails for $49.95

I like the Boy Elements pack. Since my husband and I are adopting our first baby sometime this year, we are unsure of the sex. It looked like the most gender neutral design. But all were adorable. :)

Hi Denise,
I just discovered this blog, and I also love, love, love Bumkins wraps. With our second coming next month, I'd love to try the newborn size (we started with smalls with our son, and they were pretty loose for about 6 weeks) in the Dr. Seuss prints. The great thing is that prefolds bleach out nicely in the sun, so our infant diapers all look sweet and white even though this is going to be the second time around!

I would choose the girl elements. Actually I hosted a "Cloth Diapering 101" playdate for my mom's group, and about 20 moms attended. Those who already cloth diapered brought their favorite brands & accessories to talk up. It was so informative and I'd like to do a bit more research before diving in with my 5 mo old daughter.

I like the boy elements bundle the most. Isn't cloth diapering so easy! I'm so glad we (well, I) decided to cloth diaper, we save so much waste from going into landfills and over the past year, have saved around $500. It would have been more, but I've become a bit of a CD addict ;)

We love to reuse and repurpose everything! Take cardboard egg cartons for example... We buy organic eggs that come in them.

When the eggs are gone we fill the 12 section carton with soil and start our seeds indoors.

When the seeds sprout we cut the carton in to 12 little sections and just plant the cardboard, soil and sprouted seed out in the garden bed.

Super easy and it's less cardboard at the dump! Yay.

And of course craigslist - we try to find 'new to us' items there before buying new items and we sell (or give away for free) our items before considering to throw them away.

Hm, I guess that's more than one tip!

Green things I do:
1. Compost, everything that isn't meat goes in the bucket then out to the back yard.
2. Garden (sort of goes with #1).
3. Cloth diaper.
4. Green home improvement (slowly replacing drafty windows, have a low flow shower head, as light bulbs die they are becoming CFLs, getting a clothesline!).
5. Have cloth napkins, and designated cloths for cleaning and wiping hands and dirty faces.

Useful recycle tip:

We choose paper bags at the grocery store. We keep them in the kitchen and they are our "Recycling Trash Can." We sit one right beside our trash can and fill it with our recyclables. Then, once its full, we just put the whole thing in the recycle bin outside and start over with another bag. The bags stay replenished because by the time we are running low, we need groceries again!

I Like to repurpose sheets I find on clearance to make covers for the pack 'n play or curtains etc. And I use reusable shopping bags.

Like your previous commenter, I choose paper bags at the grocery store and use them for recycling bags. I have reusable shopping bags too, but I only use them ever other time, when I have a good stash of paper, otherwise what would I use for my recycling?!? :)
We were given a gift of a reusable place mat for our first baby. It is a rubber mat with suction cups on the back and a "trough" that hangs off the table to catch food. It rolls up nice and fits in the diaper bag. it is good for when baby is on finger foods and not yet ready for a plate at a restaurant or other people's houses. I like the fancy one-time-use place mats, but they are too costly and wasteful. These are a good alternative!

My husband and I reuse all plastic containers that we buy to store everything from food related items (from food related products!) to screws in his workshop!

Hello,
I am due April 30th and expecting my first. I would pick girl trends. This will help me get started on trying out cloth diapers. I use reusable cloth bags for all my shopping.

I like the boy elements bundle. It seems the most gender neutral of the choices. I would like to tyr cloth diapering with our next baby, and this would be a nice start.

I line dry the vast majority of our clothes, we have a compost pile that in turn goes into our garden, and I use reuseable shopping bags. Also, since we live in HOT TX, we keep our A/C set to about 80 during hte summer, and during the winter, the heater is only on for maybe a whole month (total, several days here and there).
