Kellogg's New Packaging

Earth Day is just around the corner and I have lots of great "Go Green" posts and give aways coming up.

This week, Kellogg's sent me some cereal that is packaged in their new reduced packaging cereal boxes. These boxes contain the same amount of cereal as the original packaging. Right now, they are test marketing these space saving boxes in Detroit, Michigan.

I love that these boxes will stack better than the previous boxes. I also love that it uses less cardboard - so it is earth friendly! Less waste!

Here is a picture of the old box next to the new space saving box

They would love to get some feedback from mom's like you! So, tell me what you think!

  • Would the new package influence your purchasing?
  • What benefits/problems do you see in the new package?

If I'm buying that cereal, I would buy the space saving box if given the choice.

It does kind of make me mad how many companies package things in larger boxes than is necessary to make it look like there is more in the box than there really is.

I would be really excited to buy the new packaging! I definitely have more respect for companies who choose to be earth-responsible, and that certainly influences my purchases. Plus, better stacking/storage can only be a good thing!

Let's keep it real: although I appreciate the efforts of the company to create less waste, price is what influences my decision to purchase.

I'm with Sassy Stephanie, I buy what's on sale. But given the choice at the SAME price AND the same AMOUNT, then I would buy the space saving boxes. I think they would stack better in my cabinets.

I would choose this box over the other one, but probably only if it was on sale and I had a coupon. I like that they are being smarter about packaging.

like others, still have to be on budget and be influenced by sales and coupons but i am excited to see companies moving toward less waste and i definitely don't see any negatives to the new packaging. thanks!

Finally, no more boxes on top of the refrigerator, they will now fit in my cabinets! I would still choose the cheapest cereal though and if it happened to be the one in a smaller box well thats an added bonus. Love them though!

I love the new size just for the simple fact of cabinet space. But ofcourse helping the enviroment is the most important thing.

de-lurking here to say that the new box will be great! But I have to agree with the others... it shouldn't cost more than the old box if the total amount of cereal is the same. I won't pay more just for a smaller box.

I LOVE the new box!! I love how "short" it is, I tend to buy boxes of cereal that doesn't fit on our shelf so I have to lay it down and if Hubby doesn't close the box then I get to clean up cereal off the floor! I love that it has the same amount of cereal in the box but with less cardboard to recycle. I can't wait for this product to come to New Hampshire.

And yes, this new package would definatly influence my purchase for all the reasons mentioned above!

I would TOTALLY buy this box over others. I already try to buy the bags of cereal (when not buying really cheap sale boxes) so I can avoid using cardboard all together.

I would buy whatever is the cheapest, but all things being equal, I would love to get the new box size!!!
I wonder though if they will have fewer people buying it thinking that it contains less for the same price?

LOVE it! Hands down - no contest. I'd buy these over the normal ones. I appreciate that packaging companies are thinking about using less -- I struggle so much with the excess packaging!

Either way we're going to buy cereal. My husband lives off the stuff! But I think that box would really be helpfu. We have some under utalized cupboards because nothing fits in them. Currently we store cereal under a rolling kitchen cart, but with a little one arriving in the fall I'm sure that would have to change. I think this box is a great change! And if it's good for the environment to boot, awesome. :)

Love this! Wow, it will be so much easier to stack cereal now. It takes up so much space and you can't stack them at all now. If it's better for the environment that is a great bonus!

If I was shopping today for some cereal and saw a space saving box, it would definatly land in my cart. I love companies that do things to make waste less of an issue! Also, the smaller the box, the more room in my recycling container for more stuff!

I love that it is smaller. I would definately fit in my pantry a little better without having to turn the box on its side and worrying about cereal falling everywhere.

Yes, the new packaging would influence my desicion to purchase the cereal. I love being organized and saving as much space as possible and the new boxes look like they are more compact and easy to stack.
Off the top of my head, I do not see any problems with the new packaging. But once I get my hands on a new box, I will have a better idea!
thanks for sharing the info!

I love the new packaging and saving some paper and packaging. I hope that they aren't reducing the amount or increasing the price - or both for new packaging. I love the idea of being bale to get more boxes of cereal into a smaller space!! All the better to stockpile....

I'm looking forward to saving space in my cubbard!! It's about time companies start thinking about reducing waste

I live in the Detroit area and just bought a few of the new boxes. The are so NICE! I have limited space anyway and this is one more thing to help me. The kids thought they were pretty cool too.

I agree with the others: I would definitely buy the new packaging assuming the price wasn't increased or amount of product decreased. Its good to see a major company making a responsible decision regarding the environment (though I'm sure it will turn out to be profitable to them as well)!

I would love to get them! I think doing as much as we can to use less waste is great. I'd also be excited to be able to take the cereal down from on top of the fridge! I hope they do well and all cereal companies change to them!

Right now I have 8 boxes of cereal on top of my refrigerator (most of them Kellogg's). I love this! I love that it will save space, but also that it is green. Hopefully other companies (General Mills, Post) will catch on so they will all fit nicely together. I will still have to buy whatever is cheapest, but lately that does seem to be Kellogg's. I hope this hits my area soon!

Love it! Helps the earth and my storage! Cereal boxes are the hardest thing to store!

Price is really what drives my purchases. I do recycle all parts of packaging that I can. I love that Kellogg's is doing something for the environment with the smaller packaging (better for stockpiling as well!!!) and while ultimately price drives me, I'd definitely be hunting out Kellogg's deals more than other brands!

This is a really great idea! They are saving the environment and saving us space at the same time. I don't know why they didn't do it sooner. Price is what influences my purchases, so no the size of the package won't change what I buy.

This is sooo long overdue! I am glad to see it! I hope that a lot of other companies follow suit! I can't believe the number of packaging I throw away each week. There is unnecessary packaging for so many things; boxes with teeny tubes in them that are 1/8 the box size, etc. I hope that more will rethink! A shout out for "Kellogg's"!!!

I definitely like the new box. It will make it so much more convenient to stock these in the butlers pantry. Can't wait to get them in our area!

I like the new box idea. As long as it's the same amount of food for the same price I don't care what the box looks like. Save the box and just bag the cereal.

jessprof said...

Wow, I guess I'm gonna have to be the odd one here. My eyes just don't like it! I feel like I'm getting ripped off, like it's not enough cereal for my buck. And yes, I heard you when you said it's the same amount of cereal, but my head doesn't want to fit around it!!! LOL I want my big box so I think I"m getting more. Oops, sorry that's not eco-PC! Aww, who cares... if they all go to it, I guess I won't have a choice.

I'd buy the new one IF it wasn't half filled with air like the other one to begin with.

Personally I pitch the boxes after we open the cereal and just roll down the bag and clip it before tossing it in our "cereal" tote in the cabinet.

I like the idea from Tara about ditching the box and just bagging the cereal-then we'd really "see" what we were buying. Other company's do that and still sell cereal. SO if Kellogg's REALLY wants to be earth friendly get rid of the box all together...

My 2 cents;)

Misty said...

Price will always be the main factor but it sure would be nice for all the boxes to fit on my shelf standing up.

Anonymous said...

Price is my main focus. But I love that they are saving money, and helping the earth. I will definetly use my coupons to buy these!

Unknown said...

Love this and I would totally choose the space-saving packaging. We have trouble fitting cereal boxes in our pantry, so these would be great.

Anonymous said...

I'm not really all that concerned about being "green". New packaging doesn't really mean much to me. Maybe it will just be cool to see something new on the shelves.

Kate said...

I like the new size box, although as always, I only buy cereal on sale.

Benefits - less space taken up in the pantry and later, the recycle bin, and also less wasted packing materials

Problems - convincing people they're still getting the same amount of cereal.

love the "green" idea - Anymore, I try my best to buy the earth-friendly options. I'm able to recycle these boxes where I live, but less waste, less to recycle, less production pollution, there is a whole chain of events this helps!
